[Product Development] Bluegic Bluetooth Smart Home Devices

Many consider smart homes as a far future. And many consider their installation expensive and requiring reparation and transformation work at home. To sum up, smart home is cool but costly

That's not the opinion of Bluegic - A Hong-Kong based company specialized in the development of Bluetooth electrical accessories.

They came up with new devices making the control of your home possible. These smart home products make possible the automation of every system and its control through a smartphone.


The installation? Almost inexistant.
For the case of the Bluetooth plug, you only need to power the box and plug the device on it. After that, you can control it from distance or set a timer, if you want your coffee ready when you wake up in the morning.


You can control also via your smartphone:

  • The lighting
  • The away detection
  • Timer setting
  • And install macro to enhance your daily life
  • ...

However still some drawbacks:

- Expensive (59$ /device)
- Not supported by Android or Apple phones yet

Intelligent Building: Definition

Before starting to explain what are the different technologies, we should unveil the mystery about the intelligent Building technology.

I have spoken with many person during my Master in the Intelligent Building Technology and Management in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (MSc. IBTM). And I got many answers on the perception of the Intelligent Buildings that go from the most common one which is: "Oh is it when you get in a kitchen, and you clap in your hands, the light turn on?" to the most harebrained such as:" Is the building become like Optimus Prime in Transformers and start to speak to you?". I would say that the closest group is the one with the common answer (but why not for the second one :-) ).



Well, we should know that the Intelligent Building concept started years ago, in the 60s',  to be developed and evolved with many societal issues during the previous decades. The perception of human needs and demands are in constant evolution. The 60s was more focused on the organisational efficiency, the 70s on the energy crisis, the 80s on the office quality and the 90s put stress on creativity stimulation, healthy environments and productivity.
The term "Intelligent Building" started to be used to define the buildings incorporating the latest technologies. But now this definition is no longer usable since the evolution of the technology is as quick as a wink and a building with a 10-year old technology, can be considered already old (which is not the case.. well it depends).
Intelligent Building depends on the perspective and the period where people are living. For instance, back in the 1985, the November issue of Engineering Digest published an article where it shows how steel framing and cellular steel flooring made a great evolution in the Intelligent Building concept. The introduction of sensor in Buildings to control the US commercial buildings HVAC and lighting energy consumption, was another step in the Intelligent Building field.

I will add also that the definition of the intelligent building depends also on the location you're living in.
Many organisms tried to give global definition but came up with different perceptions, depending on the angle from where they made the approach:

"An Intelligent Building is one that provides a productive and cost-effective environment through the optimization of its four basics: Structure, Systems, Services and Management, and the interrelationship between them. Intelligent Buildings help business owners, property managers and occupants to realize their goals in the areas of cost, comfort, convenience, safety, long-term flexibility and marketability"

 "[An Intelligent Building is] a building and its infrastructure providing the owner, operator and occupatn with an evironment that is flexible, effective, comfortable and secure through the use of integrated technological building systems, communication controls."

"... One that creates an environment which maximizes the effectiveness of the building's occupants while at the same time enabling efficient management of resources with minimum life-time costs of hardware and facilities."
European Intelligent Building Group (EIBG, Europe)



In Japan, IBs must provide and keep an effective working environment, run automatically and comprehensively and be flexible enough to adapt to future changes in the needs of the working environment.
These needs include:

  1. A precise  air-conditioning system that adapts to a variety of working environments
  2. An anti-glare lighting system
  3. An area of refreshments
  4. An atrium
  5. A digital electronic exchange for telecommunication 
  6. An optical fiber LAN system
  7. A self-contained intelligent system
  8. A control monitoring system
  9. An entry-exit system
  10. An automatic measuring and billing system
  11. A high-volume wiring system using cellular ducts and raised floor
  12. A high load zone from  500 kg/m² to 1000 kg/m²
  13. An adaptability to parabolic antennas
We notice than Japan vision of IB is more focused on the occupants and on their needs and comfort.



Conclusion:

It is hard to summarize the concept of Intelligent Building in some sentences. This vision of the building is wide and evolve with time and the development of the technologies.
In my perception, the intelligent building aim to enhance the productivity of its occupants and help to reach their goals.
Therefore, providing a building with the latest technologies doesn't mean it is intelligent except if it responds to the occupants needs and comfort.
